I moved back to my home state of Massachusetts from Manhattan in 2012, early in my flexible dieting journey. Over the next two years all the Bouchers (aside from Dad being on a two-year unaccompanied engineering assignment in Saudi Arabia) lived in the same town. I saw my mother virtually every day, and one day she asked me how I was losing weight. I explained it to her. She’d been successfully brainwashed by the non-carb movement and was very skeptical. So I made a deal with her– I’ll prepare your meals and snacks for a couple of months, I’ll show you how to track, and then you’ll have all the tools to continue forward. So twice a week I dropped off Tupperware containers, 100-calorie bags of almonds, fruit, and protein power. All she had to do was eat the assigned meals. Eventually she got the hang of it and started cooking her own macro-friendly meals, weaving in restaurants, and found her groove. She ended up losing close to 30 lbs during the following months. She turned 65 last month and has maintained that weight plus or minus 5 lbs for the last 4+ years. I couldn’t be more proud of her achievement. She’s also an amazing artist.
